RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mrs. Irene Juanita Parson Smith; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Irene Juanita Parson Smith was born on July 18, 1921, in Ohio, the beloved
daughter of Irene Theresa Young Parson and Harry Lefever Parson, Sr.;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Smith graduated from Withrow High School and obtained her degree in home
economics from Wilberforce University, where she successfully lobbied to begin a
female cheerleading squad; and
WHEREAS,
passionate about education and learning, Mrs. Smith went on to take graduate
courses at UCLA, where she studied under the famous Hollywood designer, Edith
Head; and
WHEREAS,
she was a committed community leader as demonstrated by her many contributions
to civic organizations, including her service as a charter member of Atlanta's
Jack & Jill chapter, which focused on programs that supported and affirmed
young black men, and her volunteer work with Gate City Day Nursery, Carrie
Steele Pitts Children's Home, West Hunter Library, Atlanta Public Library, and
the March of Dimes; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Smith was a faithful and active member of First Congregational Church,
serving in many capacities that included chairperson of the Board of Deacons and
member of the Social Club, Alter Guild, and Sunday School; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Smith was united in love and marriage for 57 years to Arthur Fuller Smith,
Sr., taking their vows on April 20, 1946; and
WHEREAS,
she was known to all for her commitment to her family, and she was a loving
mother to her three children, Michelle, Arthur, Jr., and Jocelyn, and proud
grandmother to her four granddaughters, Lisa, Joy, Alayna, and Whitney;
and
WHEREAS, all who were privileged to know this distinguished woman will cherish her memory and the wonderful times shared and join her family in mourning her loss.

NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body hereby
joins in honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Irene Juanita Parson Smith and
expressing its appreciation of her many contributions to her family and
community.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Smith's
family.
