A
RESOLUTION
Commending
Mount Nebo United Methodist Church on the occasion of its 150th anniversary; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the United Methodist Church can trace its roots back to 1739, where it developed
in England as a result of the teachings of John and Charles Wesley;
and
WHEREAS,
John and Charles Wesley came to Savannah and St. Simons Island, Georgia, to
spread the gospel on the American frontier; and
WHEREAS,
Mount Nebo United Methodist Church was established in 1860 under a brush arbor
in the southern section of Paulding County, Georgia, to continue proclaiming the
gospel in the Wesleyan tradition and became known as the Mount Nebo Methodist
Episcopal South Church; and
WHEREAS,
the community and area surrounding Mount Nebo United Methodist Church became
known as Nebo in reference to the church; and
WHEREAS,
the historical Mount Nebo United Methodist Church cemetery contains the graves
of veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, as
well as slaves and other Paulding County pioneers; and
WHEREAS,
Mount Nebo United Methodist Church claims as part of its heritage the uniquely
American and uniquely Methodist practice of circuit riding preachers;
and
WHEREAS,
Mount Nebo United Methodist Church continues to be active in not only its local
parish but the world parish as well; and
WHEREAS,
Mount Nebo United Methodist Church is a congregation with open hearts, open
minds, and open doors that strives to provide spiritual guidance to the
community and be a light on the hill; and
WHEREAS,
Mount Nebo United Methodist Church is celebrating its 150th year of Christian
Service, and its congregation looks forward to the future of their church with
much hope and anticipation.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the rich history of Mount Nebo United Methodist Church,
commend its 150 years of dedicated service to the Lord and community, and extend
warmest best wishes for continued growth and success.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mount Nebo
United Methodist Church.
