A RESOLUTION


Recognizing Dr. John DeCotis on the occasion of his retirement as Superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. John DeCotis has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that he has played in the teaching profession and his deep personal commitment to the education of the students of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Dr. DeCotis has dedicated over three decades to molding young minds and challenging students through his work in the field of education as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, county-level administrator, and school superintendent; and

WHEREAS, he has been recognized with numerous honors and awards throughout his career, including the 2009 Outstanding Educator Award from the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders and was a finalist for the Georgia School Superintendents Association 2009 Georgia School Superintendent of the Year; and

WHEREAS, an active community leader, Dr. DeCotis has served as chairman of the YMCA Board of Directors, chairman of the YMCA Aquatics Facility Development Committee, and youth leadership chairman of Toastmasters International; and

WHEREAS, Dr. DeCotis is active in numerous civic and community organizations, including the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, the Fayette County Safe Kids Coalition, the Southern Federal Credit Union Board of Directors, the Fayette County Board of Health Board of Directors, the Fayette Youth Protection Home Board, and the Knights of Columbus; and

WHEREAS, at the conclusion of this school year, this highly respected school administrator will be retiring from his years of devoted service at as Superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools; and
WHEREAS, nothing is more vital to the future of our state than the education of our young people, and Dr. DeCotis has, during his career in education, exemplified the selfless dedication and professionalism which are characteristic of our finest educators; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his contributions to the students in this state, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to honor the extraordinary commitment and accomplishments of this outstanding individual.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body heartily and gratefully commend Dr. John DeCotis for his sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and contributions on behalf of education in Georgia, recognize the positive influence he has had upon the lives and futures of countless young people in this state, and congratulate him upon the grand occasion of his retirement.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. John DeCotis.
