A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Reverend Dr. Joanna Adams on the occasion of her retirement; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Joanna Adams has earned a well-deserved reputation for building bridges of understanding in both the community and the church and has demonstrated a deep, personal commitment to improving the lives of others in the name of God; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Adams earned a bachelor's degree from Emory University and taught English and creative writing at Grady High School before she graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary; and

WHEREAS, over the past 30 years, Reverend Adams has diligently and conscientiously devoted her time, talents, and energy to spreading the Gospel with five Presbyterian churches in Georgia and Illinois, at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, North Decatur Presbyterian Church in Decatur, and Central, Trinity, and Morningside Presbyterian Churches in Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, her leadership and vision have been instrumental as trustee of the Presbyterian Church Foundation and Agnes Scott College, chairperson of the Board of Trustees for Columbia Theological Seminary and the Atlanta Advisory Committee, and president of the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta, the Georgia Committee for Religious Liberty, the Christian Council of Metropolitan Atlanta, and the Columbia Seminary Alumni Association; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Adams has been recognized with numerous honors and accolades, including an Alumni Association Medal of Honor from Emory University, a Columbia's Distinguished Alumnae Award, 2006 Georgia Woman of the Year from the Georgia Commission on Women, a Woman of Achievement Award from the YWCA of Greater Atlanta, and a Planned Parenthood of Georgia Living Legend Award; and

WHEREAS, she has been named one of the 45 most loved Atlantans by Atlanta Magazine and One of the Most Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend; and

WHEREAS, a notable author, Reverend Adams has written over 30 published articles, sermons, and chapters in books and has preached at the National Cathedral, the Memorial Church at Harvard University, and many other Presbyterian and ecumenical events; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Adams is united in love and marriage to her supportive husband, Alfred B. Adams III, and they have been blessed with two remarkable children, Elizabeth and Sam, and two wonderful grandchildren.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Reverend Dr. Joanna Adams for her unparalleled record of community service, recognize her 30 years of unmatched spiritual assistance, and congratulate her upon the grand occasion of her retirement.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Reverend Dr. Joanna Adams.
