RESOLUTION
Urging
the United States Congress to facilitate the building of reservoirs upstream
from Lake Sidney Lanier; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
water is vital to human existence, providing humans, plants, and animals with
the sustenance needed for survival; and
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia currently is in a long-term drought; and
WHEREAS,
the average annual rainfall for Georgia is 50 inches, however, as of December 1,
2008, the state had received only 37 inches of rain; and
WHEREAS,
over five million people depend on Lake Sidney Lanier and the Chattahoochee
River for their water supply; and
WHEREAS,
the building of reservoirs upstream from Lake Sidney Lanier is necessary to
control water levels so that the people of Georgia and the surrounding states
are ensured an adequate supply of water.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body does
hereby urge the United States Congress to assist Georgia in our water needs by
helping facilitate the building of reservoirs on Chattahoochee National Forest
land to supplement water inflow and maintain adequate water levels in Lake
Sidney Lanier.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to President
Barack Obama, each member of the Georgia congressional delegation, the United
States Forest Service, and the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
