A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Mrs. Mildred Garrett Pendergrass for outstanding achievement during her 95 years as a resident of Atlanta, Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Mildred Garrett Pendergrass was born in Atlanta on December 12, 1914, the daughter of a City of Atlanta employee; and

WHEREAS, at the age of two, Mrs. Pendergrass was sent to live with relatives while her mother was dying from tuberculosis and returned home when her father was remarried; and

WHEREAS, at the age of seven, she was taken from her home and placed in a tuberculosis facility, Battlehill Sanatorium, for one year because of her mother's death from tuberculosis; and

WHEREAS, a class of 1933 graduate of Commercial High School, Mrs. Pendergrass entered the job market during the Depression and, unable to find work, she took an unpaid position with Southern Railroad in order to maintain her job skills; and

WHEREAS, she later obtained a job with Homeowners Loan Corporation (HOLC) and so impressed the president of First Federal Savings and Loan Association when he was called upon to resolve HOLC's financial difficulties that he asked her to come work for him at First Federal; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Pendergrass advanced rapidly within First Federal, wrote the first policy and procedures manual for savings, and became one of the first women to obtain a position as a vice president; and

WHEREAS, her significant organizational and leadership talents, her remarkable patience and diplomacy, her keen sense of vision, and her sensitivity to the needs of customers earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Pendergrass was united in love and marriage to the late Webb Pendergrass for 60 wonderful years; and

WHEREAS, she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mrs. Mildred Garrett Pendergrass on 95 years of outstanding service to the State of Georgia and recognize her for overcoming adversity from a very early age and exhibiting a pioneer spirit, work ethic, and determination throughout her life.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Mildred Garrett Pendergrass.
