A RESOLUTION

Urging the Georgia High School Association to encourage high school athletes to undergo heart screenings; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on February 10, 2010, 14 year-old William Darrin Davis collapsed and passed away after high school track practice, the victim of an undiagnosed inherited heart disorder; and

WHEREAS, young William and too many other student athletes could have been saved if they had undergone a simple heart screening which would have brought their heart defects to light; and

WHEREAS, such screenings are both available and affordable, and there is the possibility of private funds to assist those who cannot afford this life-saving procedure; and

WHEREAS, student athletes and their parents should be educated about the importance and availability of such screenings and encouraged to have the procedure done.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the Georgia High School Association is urged to notify students and parents about the importance and availability of heart screenings and to encourage high school athletes to have the procedure done.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Georgia High School Association and the press.
