RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Honorable Regina Thomas on the occasion of her retirement
from the Georgia State Senate; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Senator Regina Thomas has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for
the vital role that she has played in leadership and her deep personal
commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Senator Thomas diligently and conscientiously devoted her time, talents, and
energy to representing the interests of the people of Georgia as a member of the
General Assembly; and
WHEREAS,
she served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1995 to 1998, serving as
Assistant Majority Whip from 1997 to 1998 and focusing on education, children's
issues, and welfare reform; and
WHEREAS,
her service with the Georgia Senate began with her victory during a special
election on January 11, 2000, and she has served as a member on numerous
committees, including Education and Youth, Appropriations, Reapportionment and
Redistricting, State Institutions and Property, and the Regulated Industries and
Utilities; and
WHEREAS,
a native of Savannah, Senator Thomas graduated from A.E. Beach High School and
attended Savannah Tech and Community College of Baltimore; and
WHEREAS,
Senator Thomas has been recognized with numerous honors and accolades, including
2005 Legislator of the Year from the Georgia Environmental Council, the 2003
Reverend James Sims Public Service Award from the King Tisdale Institute, a
Distinguished Service Award from the Helen Keller Foundation, and Georgia's
Outstanding Woman of the Year in 2007 from the Georgia Deaf Association;
and
WHEREAS,
she is united in love and marriage to her husband Ervin J. Thomas, Sr., and they
have been blessed with four remarkable children and nine grandchildren;
and
WHEREAS,
a woman of deep and abiding faith, Senator Thomas is an active member of Liberty
City Church of Christ in Savannah; and
WHEREAS,
although Senator Thomas's presence on the Senate floor has been sorely missed by
her colleagues upon her retirement, the influence she has had upon the people of
Georgia will be ever present.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the Honorable Regina Thomas on her selfless, efficient, and
effective service to the State of Georgia and extend to her sincere best wishes
for a happy and healthy retirement.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Honorable
Regina Thomas.
