A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church on the occasion of their dedication service on January 11, 2009; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church has a rich and magnificent history dating back to its formation in 1868; and

WHEREAS, the founding father of Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church was Reverend Sam Byrd who was called to spread the word of God in 1865; and

WHEREAS, due to social practice of the time, Reverend Byrd, a member of Bethel Baptist Church, was forced to worship in the rear of the church; and

WHEREAS, on March 14, 1866, Reverend Byrd, along with 20 other members of the Bethel Baptist congregation, requested a dismissal from the church, which was granted on September 15, 1868; and

WHEREAS, over the last 141 years, Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church has grown to a phenomenal place of worship thanks to the dedicated and loyal service of its previous pastors: Reverend Sam Byrd, Reverend G.K. Pinkston, Dr. Reverend C.D. Hubert, Reverend A.B. Murden, Reverend T.J. Roberts, Reverend E.R. McClendon, Reverend R.E. Edwards, Reverend J.A. Bryant, and Reverend L. Dante Smith; and

WHEREAS, in November, 2005, Pastor Michael Curry was united with the Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church family, and his positive leadership style and Christian mannerisms have allowed the church to thrive and expand; and

WHEREAS, with a mission of "The Capital Vision" in 2007 and "Vision of Victory," Pastor Curry's guidance and direction have provided for a remarkable annex to the historic church; and
WHEREAS, the great vision and accomplishments of the leadership and members of Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church over the past 141 years are worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the great contributions of Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church and congratulate its congregation on the celebration of their dedication service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Pastor Michael Curry.
