RESOLUTION
Commending
Spc. Vincent Hancock, United States Army, Olympic gold medal winner from Putnam
County, and inviting him to appear before the House of Representatives; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
in August, 2008, 19-year-old Vincent Hancock became Putnam County's first
Olympic medalist when he won the gold medal for skeet shooting at the 2008
Summer Olympics in Beijing, China; and
WHEREAS,
he was ranked in first place heading into the final round at the Olympic games
after hitting 121 out of a possible 125 targets in the qualification round,
which set a new Olympic record; he shot 24 targets in the final to finish tied
with Norway's Tore Brovold; both shooters hit their first pair in the first
shoot off, and in the second shoot off, Brovold missed one of his targets, while
Hancock hit both to claim the gold medal and set yet another Olympic record for
the final; and
WHEREAS,
he was recruited to join the United States Army as a 16-year-old shotgun
shooting star who won seven international competitions before completing basic
training between his junior and senior years of high school; and
WHEREAS,
Hancock is a World Champion, Pan American Games Champion, 2007 World Cup Italy
Champion and world record holder, World Clay Target Championship bronze
medalist, and now an Olympic Champion; and
WHEREAS,
in recognition of his outstanding achievements, the United States Postal Service
designed and released nationwide a cachet envelope with a collage of pictures
honoring Hancock; and
WHEREAS,
it is only fitting and proper that he be honored by this body.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Spc. Vincent Hancock, United States Army, Olympic gold medal
winner from Putnam County, for his outstanding achievements and his service to
this nation and invite him to appear before the House on such date and at such
time as to be determined by the Speaker of the House.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Spc. Vincent
Hancock.
