A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the President and Congress of the United States to support legislative efforts
to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
nearly 70 percent of the energy consumed by the United States originates in a
foreign country; and
WHEREAS,
the United States expends nearly $700 billion annually on foreign oil;
and
WHEREAS,
reliance on obtaining such a large amount of the nation's energy from a foreign
source has greatly affected the stability in the American economy through
declining sales tax revenue and domestic job creation; and
WHEREAS,
foreign oil dependence has resulted in a lack of domestic security and allowed
other countries to restrict the individual freedoms of American citizens by
raising raw energy prices to excessive levels; and
WHEREAS,
this addiction to foreign oil must be broken in order to rouse American
technological and industrial development and encourage a transition to an energy
system that depends considerably on alternative fuel sources; and
WHEREAS,
action on this subject is needed to protect our nation's security and the
financial well-being of our people.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that this body does
hereby urge the President and Congress of the United States to enact an energy
plan that reduces the nation's foreign oil dependence by at least 30 percent in
the next decade.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Honorable
Barack Obama, President of the United States and each member of the Georgia
congressional delegation.
