House Resolution 339
By: Representatives Marin of the 96th, Brooks of the 63rd, Taylor of the 55th, Benfield of the 85th, Gardner of the 57th, and others

A RESOLUTION

Urging Congress and President Obama to enact comprehensive immigration reform; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, our nation's immigrants have made invaluable contributions to the progress of Georgia and the United States; and

WHEREAS, immigrants continue to enrich the social, economic, cultural, and civic life of our country and state; and

WHEREAS, we believe that comprehensive immigration reform policies must recognize the contribution of newcomers, as well as the important role that immigrant workers and their families play in the future growth of our nation and state; and

WHEREAS, we believe Georgia is a great destination for international visitors and international business, and we must do everything to support our efforts to recruit international visitors; and

WHEREAS, we believe that in order to best ensure our nation's security, our immigration enforcement measures must be effective, fair, and humane; and

WHEREAS, proposals which would expand enforcement of federal immigration laws by local law enforcement agencies require employers to participate in flawed employment verification systems, jeopardize the due process rights of our nation's residents, and are ineffective approaches to protecting our national security and the safety of our neighborhoods and communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body urge the United States House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and President Barack Obama to demonstrate leadership by working to achieve true comprehensive immigration reform, and rejecting unfair and ineffective immigration policies.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body urge the United States House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and the President to enact comprehensive immigration reform that provides immigrant workers and their families with an opportunity to obtain legal permanent residence and eventually United States citizenship, through an "earned" legalization program with fair and reasonable requirements; includes provisions to reunify families and reduce the immigration family backlog; provides law abiding undocumented high school students a meaningful opportunity to pursue higher education; actively furthers the civic integration of newcomers by promoting naturalization and making more resources available for English as a second language and civics instruction; and addresses the fundamental cause of migration to the United States — the need for sustainable social and economic development in the communities where migrants originate.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Georgia delegation to the United States House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and to President Barack Obama.
