A RESOLUTION


Honoring and celebrating the 100th birthday of Mrs. Ruby Cody-Brooks; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Ruby Cody-Brooks was born in Warrenton, Georgia, on January 15, 1909, the beloved daughter of Ada Myrick-Cody and Ronie Cody, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Cody-Brooks was born just a few weeks prior to the day in which her hero and favorite United States President, Abraham Lincoln, would have celebrated his own 100th birthday; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting that Mrs. Cody-Brooks was born the very same year the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded, as she is proudly known for her long time membership and activism with the organization, conducting voter registration drives when it was so dangerous it could lead to violence and even death; and

WHEREAS, this driven woman worked with vigor to eliminate illiteracy and encouraged reading programs in poor and impoverished neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, during this great moment of pride and joy, Mrs. Cody-Brooks is honored to have lived to see and vote for the nation's first African American President, Barack Obama; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Cody-Brooks was the first African American woman hired at Steins and Tannenbaums clothing stores in Warrenton, and her work ethic and dependability were priorities she would later instill in her children; and

WHEREAS, this generous and selfless woman united in love and marriage to Mose Brooks, Jr., and is blessed with four loving children Adelaide, Tyrone, Jerome, and Brenda, but serves as mother to thousands throughout her community, Georgia, and the nation; and

WHEREAS, this lifetime member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Warrenton, has taught her children the importance of a positive outlook, both about oneself and life in general; and

WHEREAS, she has always served as an example for others, reminding them that differences in race, economic status, and education were not present in the eyes of God, and that all people are created equal; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Cody-Brooks is known as "Mama" to her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins; and

WHEREAS, she remembers fondly her childhood days in Warrenton where she was a caring sister to her siblings: Ronie Jr., Pete, Beatrice, Dorothy, Eloise, and Ollie; and

WHEREAS, this distinguished gentlewoman has given inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern for her fellow citizens and she possesses the vast wisdom which only comes through experience and the strength of character which is achieved through overcoming the many challenges of life; and it is only fitting and proper that she be appropriately recognized during this very special and remarkable day in her life.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that Mrs. Ruby Cody-Brooks is hereby congratulated on the wonderful occasion of her 100th birthday and commended for her 100 years of caring devotion to her family and fellow citizens.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Ruby Cody-Brooks.
