RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mr. Jack Shipkoski on the occasion of his retirement; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. Jack Shipkoski diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of
his time, talents, and energy toward the betterment of the lives for those
affected by cancer as evidenced dramatically by his 39 years of superlative
service with the American Cancer Society; and
WHEREAS,
originally from Pennsylvania, Mr. Shipkoski earned a bachelor's degree in
sociology from Kings College; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Shipkoski began his career with the American Cancer Society in 1970 as a
Unit Executive Director for Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and served in the
Pennsylvania Division for 11 years as Service and Rehabilitation Director, Area
Manager for the Northeast Area, and Metro West Area Manager/Allegheny Unit
Executive Director; and
WHEREAS,
after moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1981, Mr. Shipkoski worked in the Society's
Southern Area Office initiating volunteer-oriented projects and was later
appointed Executive Vice President of the Georgia Division, directing a staff of
130 employees; and
WHEREAS,
in 1998, Mr. Shipkoski was named Chief Executive Officer of the Southeast
Division where his leadership guided programs in four states, 375 employees, and
over 100,000 volunteers; and
WHEREAS,
during his tenure, the Southeast Division formed an important partnership with
the Georgia Cancer Coalition and created the Patient Navigation Center, which
assists cancer patients and their loved ones with local cancer resources and
helpful information; and
WHEREAS,
in 2003, the Southeast Division and the Mid-Atlantic Division merged to form the
South Atlantic Division, serving the largest of the American Cancer Society
population, of which Mr. Shipkoski was appointed Chief Executive Officer;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Shipkoski has been active in many of the American Cancer Society's events,
including serving as the first Chairman for the Nationwide Relay for Life
Council and for the Nationwide Hope Lodge Council; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Shipkoski looks forward to enjoying his well-deserved retirement golfing,
running, and gardening, and spending time with his lovely wife, Sandra, and
children, Amy, Paul, and Erica; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this
remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Mr. Jack Shipkoski for his nearly four decades of efficient,
effective, unselfish, and dedicated service to the American Cancer Society;
congratulate him upon the grand occasion of his retirement; and extend to him
their most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Jack
Shipkoski.
