A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Atlanta Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, chartered in March of 1959, the Atlanta Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) celebrates 50 years of railway education and appreciation on March 22, 2009, at Georgia's Official Transportation Museum, the Southeastern Railway Museum; and

WHEREAS, the Atlanta Chapter of the NRHS began with the purpose of saving steam engine 290 located at Lakewood Fairgrounds; and

WHEREAS, in its early years, the Atlanta Chapter of the NRHS provided the public with access to steam powered railroad excursions, with a trip on the Gainesville Midland Railroad in 1959; and

WHEREAS, this dedicated group of train fanatics has been responsible for the preservation and restoration of American history with the restoration of The National Register of Historic Places' 1911 Superb Pullman car and saving over 90 historic railroad locomotives; and

WHEREAS, the Atlanta Chapter of the NRHS has operated the Southeastern Railway Museum since 1970 and was responsible for moving the museum to its current location in Duluth, Georgia, in 1998; and

WHEREAS, through the Southeastern Railway Museum, the Atlanta Chapter of the NRHS educates and informs Georgians and visitors of all generations through exhibits, train rides, school group tours, scout activities, special visiting exhibits, and many other activities; and

WHEREAS, the museum displays many fascinating relics from the Georgia area such as fire engines, steam tractors, tools, uniforms, station artifacts, streetcars and trolleys, railway china, and model trains that serve to transform visitors back in time; and

WHEREAS, in 2008, the Atlanta Chapter of the NRHS undertook the ambitious and important project of relocating and restoring the Duluth Depot that dates back to 1871 in order to preserve this priceless historical building with rich traditions; and

WHEREAS, the impressive and important 50 year history of the Atlanta Chapter of the NRHS is worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Atlanta Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society for its dedication to preserving the past and congratulate the organization on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Atlanta Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.
