Senate Resolution 1249

A RESOLUTION


Recognizing March 18, 2010, as Africa Diaspora Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the continent of Africa is made up of 53 distinct countries with roots that spread throughout the islands of the Caribbean; and

WHEREAS, there are many Georgia residents who were born in Africa or the Caribbean or who have families from Africa or the Caribbean; and

WHEREAS, the African and Caribbean communities of Georgia have contributed positively to the economic, social, and political well-being of this state; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia and the members of the General Assembly appreciate the presence, productivity, and many contributions of Georgia's residents of African and Caribbean birth and lineage; and

WHEREAS, the people of African and Caribbean descent have a rich cultural heritage and have greatly contributed to the economic, cultural, and social well-being of this state; and

WHEREAS, many of Georgia's African and Caribbean based organizations have made a positive impact on the lives of Georgia’s residents by organizing international health fairs, legal forums, earthquake relief efforts, youth soccer events, scholarships, and individual and global business mentoring programs; and

WHEREAS, members of the Georgia Consular Corps representing the African and Caribbean nations of the Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Jamaica, Liberia, Mali, the Republic of Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Tanzania continue to encourage global trading success and positive community involvement by participating in Africa Diaspora Day at the Georgia State Capitol.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize March 18, 2010, as Africa Diaspora Day at the state capitol in honor of the many cultural, political, economic, and social ties between Georgia and the nations and people of Africa and the Caribbean.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the consular representatives of the Bahamas, Barbados, Botswana, Jamaica, Liberia, Mali, the Republic of Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Tanzania.
