A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Georgia Commission on Family Violence; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, for the past 18 years, the Georgia Commission on Family Violence has served as the only state agency committed to increasing safety for victims of domestic violence and raising accountability for perpetrators; and

WHEREAS, created in 1992, the commission has diligently and conscientiously worked to protect the victims of family violence through its innovative programs and initiatives; and

WHEREAS, the commission has created a uniform process for accountability of domestic violence offenders, currently certifying and monitoring 147 family violence intervention programs state wide; and

WHEREAS, the state-wide Temporary Protective Order Registry was created by the commission and gives courts and law enforcement 24 hour electronic access to detailed information contained within a family violence protective order; and

WHEREAS, the commission provides technical assistance to 50 domestic violence task forces across Georgia which are citizen groups that convene to find local solutions to the problem of domestic violence; and

WHEREAS, an annual state-wide Domestic Violence Fatality Review is conducted by the commission to study the in-depth causes and consequences of deaths related to domestic violence in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the commission has helped reduce the domestic violence homicide rate in Georgia by 16.8 percent since 2001, a rate which is almost four times better than the national average; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to recognize with particularity the outstanding accomplishments of this extraordinary agency.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the Georgia Commission on Family Violence for its efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service to the State of Georgia and its commitment to ending domestic violence in this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia Commission on Family Violence.
