A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. Robert Hugo Walton; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the passing of one its finest and most distinguished citizens on January 30, 2009, Mr. Robert Hugo Walton; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Walton was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1926, the beloved son of Horace Hugo and Clara Pearl Lee Walton; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Walton was a graduate of Tech High School and earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida; and

WHEREAS, at an early age, Mr. Walton demonstrated his love of broadcast by building an operational radio station in the attic of his parent's home, which was eventually shut down by the FCC because he was unaware of the license requirement as he was only a teenager; and

WHEREAS, a legend in the fields of radio and television broadcasting, Mr. Walton spent 50 years in journalism holding positions in sales and management in Maine, South Carolina, and Georgia; and

WHEREAS, his contributions to the news terrain were not isolated to behind the scenes, as he was a frequent host of the United Negro College Fund and the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethons and the master of ceremony for numerous Miss America Scholarship preliminary pageants and of the Grand Stand Shows at the Chattahoochee Valley Fair; and

WHEREAS, always working to give back to his community, Mr. Walton was active in such organizations as the Better Business Bureau of Columbus, the Kiwanis Club of Columbus, Fort Benning's Allied Officers Training Program, and the Georgia Association for Retarded Children; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Walton was united in love and marriage to the late Sara Jo Williams Walton, a former Mrs. Columbus and Mrs. Georgia, and he was blessed with three remarkable children, Robert, Elizabeth, and Brenda and five delightful grandsons; and

WHEREAS, all who were privileged to know this distinguished Georgian join his family in mourning his loss.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body hereby joins in honoring the life and memory of Mr. Robert Hugo Walton and commending his many great achievements.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Robert Hugo Walton.
