RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mrs. Monica Pearson; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Monica Pearson has dedicated over 30 years to the State of Georgia and its
citizens through her outstanding journalism and community service;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Pearson began her love affair with television viewers in 1975 when she
became the charismatic and charming anchor of Atlanta's WSB-TV newscast;
and
WHEREAS,
a graduate of the University of Louisville, Mrs. Pearson has won 28 local and
regional Emmy awards during her time with WSB-TV and was honored with the
Distinguished Service to Broadcasting Award from the DiGamma Kappa Honorary
Society at the University of Georgia in 1989; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Pearson's stellar journalism skills and driven personality have made for a
remarkable career with great stories, such as an investigative piece uncovering
the Georgia High School Association's 87 year history of male only executive
committees and the lack of a state-wide competition for girl's soccer and
cheerleading; and
WHEREAS,
her riveting work on
Prejudice and Hate:
Georgians and the Holocaust earned Mrs.
Pearson a Humanitarian Award in 1977; and
WHEREAS,
even after her marriage in 2005 to retired DeKalb County Assistant Police Chief
John Pearson resulted in the change of her familiar and iconic last name from
Kauffman to Pearson, her loyal fans continued to tune in; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Pearson's passion extends to her work as a community activist, with active
involvement is numerous philanthropic and charitable organizations throughout
the years, including the Butler Street YMCA, Literacy Action, the Girl Scouts of
Northwest Georgia, Exodus, and the American Cancer Society;
and
WHEREAS, this native of Louisville, Kentucky, has made Atlanta her home, using her power and influence to make a difference in the community, and she was recognized as Atlanta Woman's 2009 Power Woman of the Year; and

WHEREAS,
holding great passion for the city of Atlanta and its citizens, Mrs. Pearson is
a devoted volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program and generously gives of her
time with visits to local elementary schools to read to students;
and
WHEREAS,
a woman with great civic zest, Mrs. Pearson is a most beloved and respected
leader in the Atlanta community, and her humanity and altruism is worthy of
recognition.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Mrs. Monica Pearson for her incredible career in journalism and extend heartfelt
appreciation for her contributions to her community and the State of
Georgia.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Monica Pearson.
