RESOLUTION
Recognizing
February 7, 2009, as a Day of Remembrance; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
in the tragedy at the sugar refinery plant in Port Wentworth, Georgia, on
February 7, 2008, many beloved Georgia citizens of all heritages lost their
lives and sustained physical, emotional, and psychological injuries;
and
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia continues to forge ahead to recover from this great loss,
and the steadfast and strong spirit of the local community and surrounding areas
has been revitalized and given way to numerous expressions of heroism and
spiritual healing; and
WHEREAS,
February 7, 2009, marks the one-year anniversary since the tragic event and the
State of Georgia shares in the grief and remembrance; and
WHEREAS,
in honor of those involved in the sugar refinery tragedy, all citizens are
encouraged to honor the victims of February 7, 2008, by committing themselves
through volunteerism, community involvement, and service; and
WHEREAS,
as the citizens of Georgia dedicate our time, talents, and energy to lift one
another up and foster a new level of understanding and awareness, let us honor
the memory of all those who died by being of service to one another and by
building the stronger, more perfect union our founding fathers called
for.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body extend our
deepest condolences to those whose lives will forever be changed by this most
devastating event and salute the heroism of public safety and rescue workers,
volunteers, local officials, clergy, and those who responded to this tragic
event with courage, selfless compassion, determination, and skill.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body recognizes February 7, 2009, as a Day of
Remembrance on the anniversary of this tragedy and vow to rededicate ourselves
to safety.
