A
RESOLUTION
Celebrating
the 100th Anniversary of the City of Forest Park, Georgia; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
2008 marks the 100th Anniversary of the great City of Forest Park, Georgia,
first settled in the 1820's and incorporated in 1908; and
WHEREAS,
the City of Forest Park was originally established as "Astor, Georgia," serving
as a "wood and water stop" on the Central of Georgia Railroad for steam
locomotive trains traveling in and out of Atlanta; and
WHEREAS,
the city was later renamed "Forest Park" by the Central of Georgia Railroad
because of the many park areas deeded to the city by the railroad, and in 1952,
the city charter was amended to reflect the name change to Forest Park;
and
WHEREAS,
Forest Park has emerged as viable center of commerce, home of the Atlanta State
Farmers Market, the world's largest state-owned farmers' market, and much of the
city's growth and development took place in the late 1950's through the middle
1960's; and
WHEREAS,
the City of Forest Park, located approximately 11 miles south of Atlanta,
encompasses more than 9 square miles, has a population of nearly 22,000 people,
is home to a 1,500 acre United States Army compound known as Fort Gillem, and is
one of 60 municipalities in Georgia to be designated as a "Certified City" by
the Georgia Municipal Association, Georgia Power Company, and Georgia Institute
of Technology; and
WHEREAS,
today's Forest Park maintains the same vitality, neighborliness, and suburban
charm that have so characterized its long and distinguished history, and is a
prime example of the warmth and hospitality of its citizens; and
WHEREAS,
Forest Park held a celebration in August, 2008, to commemorate the founding and
first century of existence of the city.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the City of Forest Park is hereby
joined in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the City of
Forest Park, and each citizen of this unique community is congratulated on this
momentous occasion.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the City of Forest Park.
