RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed, a Regents Professor in Georgia Tech's School of Chemistry
and Biochemistry, received the 2007 National Medal of Science, the nation's
highest science honor; and
WHEREAS,
the National Medal of Science is an award administered by the National Science
Foundation established by Congress in 1959 to recognize individuals who have
enhanced our understanding of the world and led innovations and technologies
that give the United States a global economic edge; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. El-Sayed was honored with the National Medal of Science for his seminal and
creative contributions to the understanding of electronic and optical properties
of nano-materials and their applications in nano-catalysis and nano-medicine,
his humanitarian efforts to promote communication among countries, and his role
in developing scientific leaders of tomorrow; and
WHEREAS,
this great Georgian holds the Julius Brown Chair and is also the director of the
Laser Dynamics Laboratory at Georgia Tech; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. El-Sayed is currently working to develop cylindrical gold nanorods that can
bind to cancer cells and make them easier to detect, allowing doctors to
selectively destroy cancerous cells without harm to healthy cells;
and
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia is proud to have this fine scientist, educator, and
philanthropist working to advance the field of scientific research and
cultivating the next generation of analysts.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed on his receipt of the 2007 National Medal of Science and
extend their gratitude for his hard work and dedication to the field of
science.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed.
