A RESOLUTION

Commending Georgia Tech head football coach Paul Johnson on being named the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on December 7, 2007, Paul Johnson was named the 12th head football coach in the history of the Georgia Institute of Technology; and

WHEREAS, Coach Johnson inherited one of the youngest teams in the nation with 76 freshmen and sophomores, a squad with young players at almost every position; and

WHEREAS, Sports Illustrated projected Coach Johnson' s first Yellow Jacket team to win just three games in 2008, and many pundits questioned whether Coach Johnson's option based spread offense would work at the college level; and

WHEREAS, Coach Johnson instilled a new level of toughness, discipline, and accountability in his team and insisted that his players represent the Georgia Institute of Technology in a positive manner; and

WHEREAS, Georgia Tech surprised all the aforementioned critics by winning nine games in 2008, earning a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division title, achieving a ranking of #14 in the final Bowl Championship Series poll, and winning an invitation to the Chick-fil-A Bowl Game in Atlanta, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Coach Johnson was named the National Coach of the Year by CBS Sportsline; and

WHEREAS, Coach Paul Johnson won more games than any first-year coach in the history of Georgia Tech football and is the school's first ACC Football Coach of the Year since 2000.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Coach Paul Johnson on earning the title of Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year and heartily congratulate him on his outstanding accomplishments and contributions to Georgia Tech and the State of Georgia.
