RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Antioch Baptist Church on the occasion of its bicentennial; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
on September 18, 1809, Antioch Baptist Church was formed by its parishioners,
meeting in a log cabin located in the Walton Mill area of Godfrey, Georgia,
until 1845; and
WHEREAS,
in September, 1827, during a meeting of the Ocmulgee Association preached by
Evangelist Adel Sherwood, the church located in Walton Mill was the site of a
multicounty revival in which thousands of people accepted God's grace and
salvation; and
WHEREAS,
in May, 1956, the church built its current sanctuary, incorporating timbers and
doors from a former church building for use in the new structure;
and
WHEREAS,
today, Antioch Baptist Church remains a church body dedicated to the preaching
of God's word, spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and ministering to its
community; and
WHEREAS,
in celebration of Antioch Baptist Church's 200th anniversary, the church will
hold a week-long revival followed by a special Homecoming Service on September
13, 2009, with featured speaker Reverend J. Robert White, Executive Director of
the Georgia Baptist Convention; and a special commemorative marker will be
erected at the church on that date; and
WHEREAS,
the members of Antioch Baptist Church are thankful that God has preserved their
congregation dedicated to His word and His will and look forward to the future
of their church with much hope and anticipation.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Antioch Baptist Church on its distinguished 200 year history, recognize the
church's significant role in the community and the State of Georgia, and join
with its congregation and pastor in celebrating its bicentennial.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Antioch Baptist Church.
