A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Georgia Tech tennis player Amanda McDowell on winning the 2008
NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Amanda McDowell, an Atlanta native and graduate of the Marist School, currently
pursues academic and athletic excellence at the Georgia Institute of Technology;
and
WHEREAS,
on May 26, 2008, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor University,
this Georgia Tech junior captured the school's first individual national
championship in tennis after only two years at the school; and
WHEREAS,
Amanda McDowell is the first student athlete in Georgia Tech history to be named
the National Player of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association;
and
WHEREAS,
this Yellow Jacket standout concluded her record-breaking season on a 15 match
winning streak and set a new Georgia Tech record with 45 singles wins in 2008;
and
WHEREAS,
through her hard work, Amanda McDowell has earned the title of "Champion" for
the second consecutive year after playing an integral role in Georgia Tech's
NCAA Women's Tennis Team title in 2007, and the ITA National Team Indoor
Championships in 2007 and 2008; and
WHEREAS,
this all-star athlete has brought pride and honor to her family, alma mater,
state, and nation by exemplifying the highest level of sportsmanship, skill, and
accomplishment on the court while performing exceptionally in the
classroom.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that members of this body join in
commending Amanda McDowell on earning the title of 2008 NCAA Women's Singles
Tennis Champion and heartily congratulate her on her outstanding
accomplishments.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Amanda McDowell.
