RESOLUTION
Commending
Georgia Tech professor Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed upon being awarded the National
Medal of Science; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed is the director of the Laser Dynamics Laboratory and serves
as the Julius Brown Chair and Regents Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry
at the Georgia Institute of Technology; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. El-Sayed has long been a leader in physical and materials chemistry
research, participating in over 500 scholarly publications and establishing
El-Sayed's Rule, a definitive rule found in most photochemistry texts;
and
WHEREAS,
he and his research group have most recently focused on the optical and chemical
properties of noble metal nanoparticles and their applications in nanocatalysis,
nanophotonics, and nanomedicine; and
WHEREAS,
his work has provided significant contributions to bodies of knowledge
throughout physical and materials chemistry; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. El-Sayed was honored with the National Medal of Science for his seminal and
creative contributions to the understanding of electronic and optical properties
of nanomaterials and their applications in nanocatalysis and nanomedicine, his
humanitarian efforts to promote the exchange of ideas, and his role in
developing scientific leaders of tomorrow; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. El-Sayed has brought honor and esteem to his family, the Georgia Institute
of Technology, this state, and this nation through his award and his
contributions to the field of science.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed for his contributions to this state and the greater
scientific community and congratulate him on being awarded the National Medal of
Science.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Mostafa El-Sayed.
