RESOLUTION
Urging
the federal Internal Revenue Service to remove the tax-exempt organization
status of ACORN and its associated subsidiary organizations; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) during the
2008 election year and in past years has been involved in voter registration
efforts in the various states in this nation; and
WHEREAS,
ACORN and some of its associated subsidiary organizations receive tax-exempt
status under Section 501(c)(3) of the federal Internal Revenue Code;
and
WHEREAS,
ACORN's voter registration efforts have been associated with fraudulent voter
registration activities; and
WHEREAS,
in Ohio, one person stated that he signed 73 voter registration applications
over a five-month span through ACORN; and
WHEREAS,
in Connecticut, ACORN submitted a registration card for a seven year old girl
that contained a false birthdate; and
WHEREAS,
ACORN has been accused of submitting the names of deceased persons and the names
of members of the Dallas Cowboys on registration forms in Nevada;
and
WHEREAS,
an ACORN worker in Pennsylvania has been charged with 17 counts of identity
theft and forgery in connection with voter registration applications;
and
WHEREAS,
an ACORN worker in the State of Washington was convicted of submitting false
registrations for nearly 2,000 fictitious persons in 2007; and
WHEREAS,
ACORN is under investigation for fraudulent voter registration activities in 11
states; and
WHEREAS,
an organization that engages in such activities should not receive the benefit
of a tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the members of
this body urge the Internal Revenue Service to investigate ACORN and its
associated subsidiary organizations and remove the tax-exempt status of ACORN
and its associated subsidiary organizations for this improper
activity.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of
Internal Revenue, the Secretary of the Treasury, and all members of the Georgia
congressional delegation.
