A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Gwinnett County Public School System on its recognition as the Georgia Economic Education Program of Excellence for 2009; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Gwinnett County Public Schools give their social studies and economics teachers ample opportunity to access instructional workshops and educational resources so they can prepare their students for academic success in economics; and

WHEREAS, the efforts undertaken by the Gwinnett County Public Schools have led to dramatic improvements in economics scores on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test, the End-of-Course Test, and the Georgia High School Graduation Test; and

WHEREAS, because the concept of economics can sometimes be difficult to convey to young students, the Gwinnett County Public Schools assists elementary school teachers in creating innovative methods for teaching their students in a manner which is easily comprehended; and

WHEREAS, the Gwinnett County Public Schools provided each of the county's 4,000 elementary teachers training in the teaching of economics; and

WHEREAS, the Gwinnett County Public Schools saw the transition to the new Georgia Performance Standards as an opportunity to strengthen the economics teaching skills of social studies and economics teachers, holding 72 teacher training sessions in economics over three weeks and improving the instructional skills of more than 2,000 of its teachers; and

WHEREAS, for their considerable efforts in creating an outstanding economic education
program, the Georgia Council on Economic Education has named the Gwinnett County Public School System the 2009 recipient of the Georgia Economic Education Program of Excellence; and
WHEREAS, the teaching of economics has never been more essential, and the professional excellence of teachers of economics is vital to the future of the young people of Georgia and this nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the Gwinnett County Public Schools for their excellence in economic education, their dedication to teacher training, and their steadfast commitment to the students of Gwinnett County and Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Alvin Wilbanks, superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools, and Debbie Daniell, social studies coordinator with Gwinnett County Public Schools.
