A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Dr. Horace W. Fleming, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Dr. Horace W. Fleming, Jr., on May 1, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Elbert County, Georgia, Dr. Fleming earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Georgia and a doctoral degree in political science from Vanderbilt University; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Army as a captain during Vietnam and earned the Bronze Star and Regimental Cross of Gallantry; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fleming began his career in education in 1971 at Clemson University, where he devoted 19 years challenging the minds of students, served as president of the faculty senate, and was chosen as Alumni Master Teacher in 1979 by the Clemson student body; and

WHEREAS, he took a leave of absence from teaching in 1980 to serve as chief economist for the Judiciary Committee of the United States Senate and staff director of the Office of President Pro Tem of the Senate, Senator Strom Thurmond; and

WHEREAS, upon his return to the field of education, Dr. Fleming served as executive vice president at the University of the Pacific, administrator and provost of Mercer University, and president of the University of Southern Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fleming was united in love and marriage to his adoring wife, Orene "Steve" Fleming, and was blessed with the love of his son, Capt. Patrick W. Fleming, and his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Timothy Snowden; and
WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Dr. Fleming will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, brother, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Dr. Horace W. Fleming, Jr., and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Horace W. Fleming, Jr.
