Representative Mike Glanton

HD 76 (D - Ellenwood)

Representative Mike Glanton has been a public servant/volunteer/leader for over

thirty years. He is a United States Army Retired War Veteran and has worked as

a Federal and State employee. He has spent significant time in over thirteen (13)

countries and lived in eighteen (18) different cities around the world.

Representative Glanton began his political career serving with the Clayton

County Democratic Party where he was elected to the State Committee for the

Democratic Party of Georgia serving on the Voter Registration and Constituency

Groups sub-committees. He is in his third term as a State Committee member.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. Among his awards are

the Federal Humanitarian Service Medal, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the

Georgia Secretary Of State’s Outstanding Citizen Award. He is a 2008 Top

Volunteer and District Partner In Education for the Clayton County Public

Schools and serves on the Superintendent’s Executive Advisory Council. He is

Clayton County Arc’s 2008 “Legislator of the Year”. And the Clayton County

Chamber of Commerce “Community Service Award” recipient for 2008.

Rep. Glanton serves on the Governing Council for the new Clayton County

Public Charter School Elite Scholars Academy and was instrumental in obtaining

approvals at the local and State levels for the Charter School. He currently

serves on the Clayton County Public Schools Strategic Planning Committee

developing the vision and mission of the school system’s future objectives. He is

a Partner In Education with several schools and often participates in Career Day

and Read across America programs and is an active PTSA member. He was

recently honored as a Top Volunteer and District Partner for Clayton County

Public Schools 2009. He was instrumental in a successful initiative to create an

Elementary Level Fine Arts Magnet school for Clayton County Public Schools.

Representative Glanton is the first African-American to represent his District and

the first African-American born in Rome (Floyd County) to ever serve in the

Georgia General Assembly. He currently serves as Chairman of the ninemember

Legislative Delegation representing Clayton County and recently served

as its Secretary during the 2007-2008 legislative sessions.

He matriculated with Liberty University, Fayetteville State University, Georgia

Military College and the United States Army Logistics Management College. He

is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Society and is past Vice-President and

Founding Member of the Georgia Military College Honor Society Chapter Zeta

Beta Alpha.

He currently serves on numerous local boards including Chairman, House of

Dawn, Inc., Chairman, FI HI Hope Foundation, Vice-Chair, Alzheimer’s Support

Center among others. He is a member of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus

(GLBC), the National Legislative Black Caucus (NLBC), the Southern Legislative

Conference (SLC) the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL), the

Georgia House Democratic Caucus and the Metro Alliance of Delegation Chairs

(MADC).

He is a graduate of the Georgia Legislative Institute administered by the Carl

Vinson Institute of Government at the University Of Georgia. He currently serves

as a senior consultant/advisor to the Clayton County Grassroots Leadership

Institute and the Clayton County Archway Partnership Project.

Representative Glanton is in his second consecutive term in the Georgia House

of Representatives and serves on the House Transportation, Defense and

Veterans Affairs, Children and Youth and Ways and Means Committees. He has

sponsored and co-sponsored several pieces of “key’ legislation.

He also serves on several subcommittees to include Transportation Funding,

Income and Sales Tax, Finance and Public Policy, Peachcare, Roads and

Highways and served on the study committee for the state of the State Health

System. As a member of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, Rep. was

appointed to the Transportation and Lottery Commission Sub-Committees.

Representative Glanton was appointed by the Democratic House Leadership to

serve during the 2009 session as the Vice-Chair of the Democratic House

Caucus Policy Committee on Public Safety. He was recently selected to the

Georgia Chamber of Commerce 2009 “Honor Roll”.

He is a licensed and ordained Minister and pastor’s New Life Christian Church in

Jonesboro and currently serves as the President of the Clayton County Ministers’

Conference and Co-Founded the Coalition of Clayton County Clergy. He is the

recipient of the Coalition’s 2009 Exceptional Servanthood Award. Rep. Glanton is

currently a 2010 candidate for election to the Georgia State Senate for Senate

District 44 representing Clayton and Henry counties. He resides in Jonesboro

with his lovely wife Pearla (Kauai, Hawaii) and his granddaughter Jaida; a

student at Jackson Elementary school. He is the father of five adult children and

grandfather of eleven.
