Senate
Resolution 605
By:
Senator Pearson of the 51st
ADOPTED
SENATE
A
RESOLUTION
Requesting
that the United States Congress avoid wasteful, unnecessary, and unwise
projects; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the United States Congress has passed and President Barack Obama has signed
legislation known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 as a way
to stimulate the American economy and create new jobs for American workers;
and
WHEREAS,
a significant percentage of the funds authorized by this act are targeted toward
creating jobs through investments in transportation and other infrastructure
projects; and
WHEREAS,
one reported project seeking funding includes a so-called "Mob Museum" in Las
Vegas, Nevada, which is an obvious waste of taxpayer dollars; and
WHEREAS,
even such projects as the O'Hare Modernization Project, which purports to solve
delays at the nation's second busiest airport, may seem like quality
infrastructure investments, but close examination reveals that the project does
not fix key choke points at the existing terminal, lengthens the time and
distance that airplanes must taxi, increases the number of aircraft taxiing
across active runways which creates safety risks, and requires travel times
estimated at 45-60 minutes from the main terminal to the new terminal;
and
WHEREAS,
this project, referred to as "The Runway to Nowhere," has failed to obtain
funding from local, state, and federal sources based on a review of the
project's merits, and the airlines serving O'Hare Airport have called the plan
ill-conceived and premature.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body request
that the Georgia congressional delegation carefully review all proposed projects
to ensure that any taxpayer dollars authorized and appropriated for
transportation infrastructure meet strict economic competitiveness standards
based on improving mobility for the American
public.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the the members of this body request that the Georgia
congressional delegation oppose efforts to build projects like the so-called "Mob Museum" and the so-called "Runway to Nowhere."
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the the members of this body request that the Georgia

BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to each member of the Georgia
congressional delegation.
